Monday 17:00 - 18:00 St Andrews Church Hall
The Squirrels Drey runs an exciting programme of both indoor and outdoors activities each Monday evenings. It's open to any young person from 4 to 6 years
Squirrels Scouts are young people usually aged between four and six years old. They belong to the first and youngest section in the Scouting family. They can move to the next section Beavers Scouts , at the age of six.
The scouting movement was started in 1907 on Brownsea Island by Lord Baden Powell. The Squirrels programme started in 2021.
Easily recognised by their distinctive red sweatshirts, Squirrels Scouts enjoy making friends, playing games, going on visits and helping others. They usually meet together once a week in a Squirrels Scout Drey.
Some Squirrels Scout Drey also organise Sleepovers. These are often the first time a young person spends a night away from home. They take place in suitable buildings, often Scout centres.

Investitures
Once your child has been to at least four meetings, they will be eligible to become a Squirrels Scout. Either you can ask me (if your child hassles you!) or I will ask after about seven meetings.
To be invested, your child must attend at least four meetings and answer some questions about their Drey and scouting in general. The questions will be sent to you after about three weeks' attendance. All the answers can be found on this page.
To become invested, they will be required to:
- Make the salute by holding the right hand at shoulder height in the position shown.
- Learn the Squirrels promise.
What is an Investiture
Investiture is a special time where someone makes their Scout Promise, and becomes a member of both their group, and the worldwide Scout family. Some people call these Promise ceremonies and it’s often known as being ‘invested’. Parents/carers are often invited to watch the special occasion.
Traditionally, people will make the Scout sign while they’re making their Promise and the person leading the ceremony will often shake their hand afterwards, using the Scout handshake.
When new Squirrels have settled in and decided they want to stay, they will make their Squirrel Scout Promise, which is the same as the Beaver Scout Promise. They’re welcomed to Squirrels, and become a member of both their Drey (the name for a Squirrel group) and the worldwide Scout family.
They’ll get their Membership Award. This is a purple badge with a picture of the fleur-de-lis – an international symbol that’s worn by Scouts all over the world. They may get some other local badges too, to show where their group is located.
They’ll also get their scarf, which they can proudly wear, to show which Scout Group their Squirrel Drey is part of. You may want to give them something else, like a certificate or a gift representing Squirrels, to mark the occasion.

Moving up to Beavers
Bell Cashford, the Beaver Scout Leader, normally comes to a couple of Squirrels meetings prior to your child going up. On the Monday that your child starts, he will be there to meet them.
Your child will continue to wear their Squirrels uniform when they first go up to Beavers. Once we have established that your child is happy at Beavers, they can wear the Beavers sweatshirt. When your child is invested into Beavers, they will be given their new badges.
